[ Bitcoin ] Could blockchain be used to secure voting?

[ 🔴 DELETED 🔴 ] Topic originally posted in Bitcoin by foxy-agent [link]
Hi everyone, I recently started reading about Bitcoin and have become really intrigued by the concept of the blockchain to authenticate transactions as a master ledger. While this is obviously great for financial records, my brain made a connection outside the box for a use case: voting. I like participating in my democracy, and assume others do too, but standing in line at the polls, risking your health, getting time off from work or finding a ride to a voting location an demotivate you from participating. I wish it were easier, like online banking, but after so many news stories of companies getting hacked and losing user data it’s really scary to think that so much information & power could be manipulated by just one system. For the moment, a diversified node system seems to be the most secure.
But I would love to see a day come when voting is as easy as downloading an app to my phone and logging a vote. Authentication for log-in could be based on matching a SSN to some kind of 2-factor authentication info (USPS mailer card with PIN?). But even with a way to verify one real person with one vote, a centralized system is a major target for hacking.
So my question is, could blockchain be used to authenticate voter roles? I believe it could, although I see there is a limit to the number of transactions per block, which might limit the number of votes that could be recorded in a given time frame. One solution might be a very large block, since the chain would not be that long, but another solution to handle the throughput of millions of votes cast in one day could be several smaller chains that tie into a larger chain, like a reverse fork? Each state (or county) run a blockchain and then send their independent results to a larger blockchain?
For example, several cities in a county could collect votes from 12am to 11:59pm, and then the balance of their transactions (the votes) could be submitted to county or a state’s ledger, and then the state could submit their ledger to the national ledger, and it would all be verified with blockchain.
Anyway, would really appreciate any input to this idea.

Online Voting With Blockchain Not Secure. The idea of online voting has been touted for quite some time in countries around the world. As blockchain-based technology began to make ways, voting seemed like one of its best use cases. Its decentralized nature means that no central authority could impact the results, while its immutability means that alterations would be challenging. On top of all ... However, voting on the blockchain already exists, without identity verification. There are several DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations) that use the blockchain to allow token holders to vote, but without verification of the identity of the voter, and especially without assigning a single vote to each individual voter. Blockchain voting is similar to analogue voting that we’re used to. The same concepts and processes apply. In order to cast a digital vote, a citizen would need to register and prove their citizenship in a given jurisdiction. We could then record that identity and citizenship on the blockchain associated with that user’s key. Blockchain “could revolutionize voting and elections,” Terry Brock writes in the Chicago BizJournals. “We hear a lot of talk about blockchain being used in areas such as finance and currency as referenced with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies,” he says. “We also hear a lot about it being used in health care, smart contracts and ... Examples of blockchain voting: In 2017, Votem introduced a ‘CastIron Mobile Voting Platform, ’ which uses a private blockchain to make voting more safe, secure, and efficient. This private blockchain can be controlled by a trusted party such as the government. Voters sign up to use the app, which links to a list of verification documents to ...
